04 May 2017

Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery presided over the first board meeting of the recently set up Equal Opportunities Council. Dr. Jawahery said the setting up of the Council reflects the Company's desire to support and care for working women and to take steps in that direction.

The Council, which includes members of Executive Management and a representative of the Company’s Labour Union, pays great attention to promoting and empowering women.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Jawahery thanked GPIC Board of Directors who, he said, were keen to provide all possible facilities to the Council. He said the Council had taken note of the directives and vision of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and Supreme Council for Women President.

He said the meeting also took decisions aimed at empowering women and giving them more opportunities in training within and outside the Company. Dr. Jawahery said the Council would work according to a time table and well thought out strategies to implement these decisions and turn them into reality.

He said the Council's constitution, including rules and regulations for equal opportunities, were adopted during the meeting. These stress on the importance of following the rules and encouraging their implementation within the Company.

The constitution also specifies the functions of the Council, including supervision of equal opportunities for all employees, male and female. The Board also noted the commitment of the Council in all its activities according to the guidelines for equal opportunities set up by the Supreme Council for Women.

Dr. Jawahery said GPIC is intensifying efforts to communicate and coordinate with other private sector companies to inform them of the setting up of the Council and to encourage them to set up similar bodies and committees.

He said the board of the Council welcomed the transfer and exchange of knowledge and experience with other organizations and companies in Bahrain to eliminate discrimination and exploitation and open opportunities for women of all ages.

The Council would ensure the implementation of its objectives in line with those set up by the Supreme Council for Women. Its responsibilities include monitoring the implementation of equal opportunities in the Company and coordination with the Supreme Council for Women as well as supervising all initiatives approved by the Council.

It would also prepare regular reports on equal opportunities through regular meetings to discuss and review progress and prepare relevant reports and statistics.

Under the constitution, the President of the Board will appoint Company employees, men and women, as members once a year.
