Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) Chairman Dr. Ahmed Al Shariyan has congratulated company employee and a member of the Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation, Osama Salman Hassan, on being elevated as a member of the Board of Directors of the General Organisation of Social Insurance (GPIC) as a representative of the private sector. The appointment of Mr. Osama comes after His Majesty King Hamad issued Royal Decree No. (42) of 2018.

Dr. Al Shariyan expressed pride at the Royal trust in choosing Mr. Hassan and said it was appreciation of the company and its workers, who are trained and equipped with all skills that enable them to carry out all responsibilities they are entrusted. He said GPIC employees are on the boards of various agencies and bodies and benefit from the experience.

Dr. Al Shariyan affirmed the board's confidence in Mr. Osama's ability to actively contribute to the further development of the General Organisation for Social Insurance.

Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said he is proud of the choice of Mr. Osama and said his selection is a stamp of approval for the GPIC and its policies.

Dr. Jawahery congratulated Mr. Osama and praised his contributions to trade union work not only at the GPIC but also nationally and said he and his colleagues worked to establish a commitment to the true principles of trade unionism giving up their personal interests and goals.

Mr. Osama Salman thanked His Majesty the King and said it is a step in the right direction. He said the presence of a representative of workers will have an impact on the preservation of workers' rights. He added he would contribute to realizing workers’ aspirations.

He also thanked the GPIC management for their support and encouragement to company employees and enable them to contribute in various fields.

Mr. Osama holds a bachelor's degree in political science and joined GPIC in 1996. He is a founding member of the GPIC labour union and served as its secretary from 2005 to 2015. He also served as secretary of the Central Council of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions from 2008 to 2012 and Secretary General of the Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation since 2012. He is also the Assistant Secretary General for Information Affairs of the Arab Confederation of Trade Unions.

He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Arab Labour Organization and also a member of the constituent committee of the Union of Workers of the GCC Countries in addition to his membership of the Labor Arbitration Tribunal in the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments. And he is the Chairman of the Higher Committee for the May 1 ceremony since 2013. He has attended several Arab and international conferences and events related to trade union and labour and presented lectures and workshops on trade union organization within and outside Bahrain.
