26 August 2018

The Environment Committee of the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) organized a lecture on the importance of preserving the marine environment.

The lecture was in response to the Company Board of Directors' directives to protect the environment from all risks and threats posed by the industrial boom.

Mr. Hassan Janahi, a specialist in diving, who presented the lecture at the Academy of Leadership and Learning, addressed several Company employees and officials. Mr. Janahi thanked the Company’s Environmental Committee for inviting him and spoke on the role of diving in contributing to environment protection initiatives. He stressed it was a good opportunity to highlight the types of marine life rich in Bahrain’s waters.

During the lecture, he reviewed his personal experience in participating in various environmental events as a diving practitioner, explaining the skills and craftsmanship required by the sport to identify threats faced by marine organisms under the sea, which, if neglected, may cause a negative change in the environment.

He spoke about the requirements of diving, pointing out that there are special needs to learn diving, including good health, especially since the diver needs a lot of effort during the process. He said the diver needs to take theoretical and practical lessons in the swimming pool as well as lessons at sea before graduation as a beginner diver qualified to dive in open sea to a depth of 18 meters.

He said the diver should be aware of the risks he may face and should train at a qualified centre and coach, explaining that there are some conditions set by the responsible authorities in each country that prevent diving in some areas, like reserves, to preserve fish. He focused on the importance of raising awareness of the marine environment, which we should all keep safe and avoid polluting the coasts with waste that would contribute to polluting the entire marine environment.

In a statement, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery thanked Mr. Janahi for presenting the lecture, which would contribute to spreading awareness of the importance of observing the marine environment and maintaining the cleanliness of the marine environment.

The President also thanked the Chairman and members of the Environment Committee for their efforts in organizing the awareness lecture.
